Our 2021 B Academics Teaching Roundtable: Teaching Business as a Force Good from June 16th, 2021 featured innovative tools, strategies, and approaches to teaching and engaging students around B Corps, public benefit corporations and business as a force for good. Sessions included exploring experiential B Impact Teams models, teaching with cases, and a roundtable discussion on best practices in teaching.

Welcome Session

Session #1 – B Impact Teams Panel

  • 1:15 – 2:15pm Experiential learning and B Impact Teams Panel (Moderator: Meredith McKee Adkins, University of Arkansas, Arkansas Global Changemakers – The People, Planet, and Profit Project) – B Impact Teams are self-organized teams of college/university students that assist businesses to measure and manage their impact. These student-led consulting teams serve their local community by assessing social and environmental metrics of community businesses using the B Impact Assessment (BIA). Hear from five different models of B Impact Teams:
  • Jessica Yinka Thomas, Poole College of Management, NC State University, Business Sustainability Collaborative – NC State B Corp Clinic
  • Kristin Joys, University of Florida, Social Impact & Sustainability Initiative – UF Business for Good Lab
  • Fiona Wilson, University of New Hampshire, Sustainability Institute – B Impact Clinic
  • Jake Mosely, Terry College of Business, University of Georgia – B Collaborative
  • Skye Blue Sprawls & Courtney Meidenbauer, Portland State University – B Impact PSU

Session #2 – Teaching with Case Studies

  • 2:15 – 3:00pm Teaching with Case Studies (Facilitator: Maria Ballesteros-Sola, Cal State Channel Islands, B Academics Chair of Membership) – The case method is widely accepted as an effective pedagogical method as it bridges the gap between theory and practice by building high-order thinking skills (HOTS) and facilitating sense-making.  This session will explore the why and how of teaching with cases both online and offline. We will discuss the expanding repertoire of B Corps cases from different publishers and provide some tips for case writers.

Session #3 – Best Practices in Teaching

  • 3:00 – 4:00pm Best Practices in Teaching about Business as a Force for Good (Moderator: Emily Landry, University of Tennessee, B Academics Chair of B Local Engagement Committee) – The Best Practices in Teaching session will include eleven short “lightning round” style presentations by educators of various backgrounds who are teaching about B Corps. The session will cover engaging and effective teaching techniques and strategies for anyone who is incorporating lessons about B Corps into their classroom pedagogy, institutional frameworks, or private-sector organizational education efforts. Session participants and their affiliations are as follows:
    • Daniel Amgarten: Co-Founder and CEO, campus b – Daniel will present details of best practices for connecting international students with local students through “campus b’s” internship program (a certified B Corp based in Brazil).
    • Maria Ballesteros-Sola: Assistant Professor, California State University Channel Islands & Nina Magomedova: Assistant Professor, UIC Spain -Maria and Nina will present details of best practices for experiential learning, international student teams, project based learning, digital literacy, social enterprise knowledge and consulting skills through a COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) initiative.
    • Pablo Esteves: Executive Director of University Programs, Emzingo & Emzingo U – Drew will present details of best practices for a model of summer experiential learning that combines immersive project-based work, deep introspection, leadership development, cultural awareness, and team building – highlighting how Emzingo has converted from a high touch in-person model to a 100% remote experience. 
    • Megan Buchter: Director, Case Western Reserve University/Fowler Center for Business as an Agent of World Benefit – Megan will present details of best practices for AIM2Flourish, an experiential learning activity that is the world’s first higher-education curriculum incorporating the UN Sustainable Development Goals and “Business as an Agent of World Benefit”. 
    • Calvin Chung: Assistant Professor of Business, Mary Baldwin University – Calvin will present details of best practices for how to implement the B Corp concept into curricula at the program level, including a model for an MBA program based on the B-Impact Assessment.
    • Nell Derick Debevoise: Founder and CEO, Inspiring Capital – Nell will present details of best practices for the “Spheres and Fears of Impact” framework for leadership development within B Corps and other business organizations who want to learn how to be a force for good by identifying the impacts they have in their work and lives.
    • Evan Green: Asst. Director DE&I Outreach, Director of the Int’l Business Certificates & Int’l Partnerships & Ph.D. Candidate, Portland State University and Craig Ostbo: Adjunct Faculty, Marketing | Principles of International Marketing, Portland State University School of Business – Evan and Craig will present about the Portland State University Summer Business Institute (SBI), a unique opportunity for high school students of color & those from culturally underserved/underrepresented backgrounds to learn from college faculty about B Corporations, social responsibility and sustainability.
    • Min Han Ko: Co-Founder & Strategic Advisor, B Corps China – Min will present about their about B Generation program and the BBB game they’ve created.
    • Jacob Park: Associate Professor, Castleton University and University of Johannesburg – Jacob will present details of best practices for an experiential impact finance class exercise that strikes a balance between theoretical rigor, market relevance, and pedagogical application. 
    • Michael Pirson: Professor and Area Chair, Fordham University – Michael will present details of best practices for fundamentally shifting the current business school education model through collaboration with the Jesuit Business School Network, the Vatican, and the United Nations.
    • Bob Willard: Founder and Chief Sustainability Champion, Sustainability Advantage – Bob will present details of best practices for a comprehensive framework he has developed with topical insights and context about progress on sustainability in the business community, with an emphasis on B Corps and a CFO-friendly approach for framing the cost-benefit analysis for sustainability-related projects.

Happy Hour

  • 4:00 – 5:00pm Optional Interactive Happy Hour (Host: Summer Brown, DePaul University, B Academics Secretary) – Stay after the close of the official roundtable for a series of small group discussions to continue the conversations and connect around the following topics:
